Although it is not his most famous liturgical work, Dvorak's Mass in D Major is still considered to have a special place in his choir and orchstral repertoire. It was comissioned by the Prager Architekt Josef Hlávka for the opening of the chapel on his palace in Luzany in southwest Bohemia. Dvorak began composing the Mass on March 26 1887 and completed it on June 17th. The premiere was held on September 11, 1887 in the palace chapel.
Composed by Welsh composer Kar Jenkins in 2008, this stunning Stabat Mater incorporates both traditional Western music with ethnic instruments and vocals. The soloists exchange with each other between English and Aramaic, and the orchestration is noted for its strong use of timpani. This is one work that is well worth hearing!!
